The people who use Cantori are parish musicians. A good number of them are over sixty, read from a music stand in bad light, and are using a phone held at arm's length. Building for them and building for a screen-reader user turn out to be the same work.

What we aim at

We build toward the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 at Level AA. We do not claim to have met every success criterion; we claim to be measuring against them and fixing what we find.

What is built in

• Body text is checked against a 4.5:1 contrast ratio. An automated audit runs over the interface and fails the build when a colour pair falls short.
• Every image carries alternative text. Decorative images are marked as decorative so a screen reader passes over them instead of reading a filename.
• Tap targets are at least 44 by 44 points, and form text is at least 16px so a phone does not zoom when you tap a field.
• Motion respects your system setting. With “reduce motion” on, animation is removed rather than slowed, and no state is communicated by movement alone.
• Printed worship aids and chant sheets can be produced in a large-print edition.

What we know is not finished

• The chant engraver is a visual editing surface. Reading and playback work; composing a chant with a keyboard alone is not yet a complete path.
• Some older screens have not been through the keyboard-navigation pass.
• Translations other than English have not been checked for layout at every text length.
